
Rolex launched the model in 1953 to coincide with the ascent of Everest in May of that year, when Sir Edmund Hillary and his guide, Tenzing Norguay, became the first men to reach the 29,000-feet (8,650 metre) summit. There is no clear evidence to suggest that either of them actually wore the watch on the grueling climb - except Rolex's own claim that they did -- but the Explorer myth was born - and it stuck.
